Junior’s Program
Catch a Fish & Catch
a Kid
Plum Island Surfcasters in conjunction with local sponsors
has established a yearlong program to introduce saltwater fishing to kids 7-14
years old accompanied by an adult. As
a club we are interested in seeing new sportsmen learn to enjoy saltwater
fishing and monthly exchanges of information regarding this sport.
Local businesses participating will be able to direct new fishermen and
their adult sponsors to local fishing areas, suggesting equipment, and bait.
New
members are encouraged to join at any time; questions on the program are always
welcome.
2003 was a good year with many junior members returning and
others joining we will continue to learn about saltwater fishing, while taking
more fishing trips as a club, once the weather improves and the fish are back.
In the mean time, starting on the 4th Friday of every month
the Plum Island Surfcaster Juniors Club will meet.
The winter meetings will continue to focus on equipment: Is your rod and
reel clean from last year? A how too event; Make your own fishing plug; what
lures to use and when; Tie a saltwater fly; Where is the best places to fish and
when; Visits to some local Bait and Tackle shops; and more!!!
Due to the diverse age of juniors (and seniors) we will look to divide
the club up to allow the older boys and girls or experienced kids to take on
challenging activities, including leadership in some activities. The club is for Kids and we want to make sure activities are
something all enjoy and learn from. This
approach worked extremely well in 2002 and again in 2003, so it will be the
model for 2004.
The program is open to all kids as part of the 2004 family
membership for $30.00; juniors must be accompanied by an adult at events.
